Vis island - a place where you can spend almost a full week without being bored
Vis is one of the most magical places situated on the Croatian coast. It is the farthest inhabited island of the Croatian mainland and a couple of famous movies were filmed there. Two largest towns on the island of Vis are Komiža and Vis town. Both towns are typical Dalmatian towns with old stone houses and history on every corner.
Here are some cool places that you can visit while sailing around Vis:
1. Komiža
Komiža - a small cute coastal old Dalmatian town on island Vis. Komiža is situated in a deep bay and offers a numerous cultural and historic sites, monasteries and fortresses. Komiža is also famous for its fishermen tradition.
2. Vis town
Vis is situated on the island's northeast side. Vis has many historical sites: Church of Our Lady of Spilice, Church of St. Cyprian and Justina, Church of St. George, Church and monastery of St. Jerome, Gariboldi Palace, Gazarovic Palace, house of Prdvaric family, Perasti tower ....
3. Stiniva bay
Stiniva beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. The beach is know for its unique natural beauty dominated by high cliffs that protect the beach from the seaside. It is a must see place on Vis island.
5. Submarine bunker
Vis was actually closed for foreigners until 1991. This was because it was a military island, housing some of Tito's military secrets. Vis is home of one of three submarine bases which is now one of most popular places to visit.
6. Titos cave
Tito was indeed "hiding" out on the island of Vis during WWII, but as to whether he was actually hiding and working in these caves is more likely to be a legend rather than reality.
7. Blue cave
Not only is the Blue Cave one of the unique natural phenomena in the world, but this bright and beryl attraction on Biševo island (near Vis) is destined to be the highlight of your Croatian holiday. The magnificent work of Mother Nature, this cerulean oasis is so unique because it is formed due to seawater eroding limestone, a rock Biševo island is wholly composed of.
8. Dive into the crystal clear sea
Enjoy the cristal clear water around the island. Take your snorkeling equipment with you and dive into the sea. Explore the life under the surface.
9. Mount Hum
If you are feeling adventurous climb the mount Hum. The view from the top is one of the best views ever!
10. Rent a kayak with Noa yachting and visit the Green cave
The Green Cave is located on the south-west side of small, uninhabited island of Ravnik. It’s just a short distance from Vis Island. The Green Cave in Croatia is not only larger, but here you can also experience the unique opportunity of swimming or snorkelling inside. Renting a kayak with Noa Yachting gives you the opportunity to explore the cave on a unique way.
11. Taste the finest wine and nicest meals
Wherever you go, you will eat good, but while on Vis don't leave without trying Viška pogača or Komiška pogača.
Vis is known for two wines: the full-flavoured red Plavac Mali and the dry white Vugava. Leading its modern-day revival has been local winemaker Antonio Lipanović. Not only are his labels the ones to look out for on any restaurant wine list, but his tasting rooms are unique - right at the mouth of a network of military tunnels blasted out by Tito after 1945.
12. Party on fort George
Named after the English king who famously lost America, Fort George was built by the British in Napoleonic times. Abandoned for generations, Fort George was recently reconfigured and reopened and now houses the Sunset Bar & Club, an open-air drinking lounge with spectacular views and cocktails. Live bands, mainly domestic acts, play on Friday nights and DJs spin party music most nights through the summer. There’s also a restaurant and art gallery.
