Hiring a skipper for your charter in summer 2022
No commitment, no responsibility, no damage, no stress - this is why you want to have a skipper on the boat while sailing along the Adriatic in summer 2022. If you don’t have a license, this does not mean that a sailboat is off limits. You only need a skipper, a person who will sail the sailboat or drive the motor boat instead of you. If you don’t know one, you can simply hire one. We've answered the most frequently asked questions about the process of hiring a skipper and why is it good to have a professional on the boat.
1. What does the skipper do on the boat?
A skipper isn't your hostess or your chef. He or she is a person that navigates the boat. He follows the weather forecast and takes you to the best places along the Croatian coast. He thinks about the safety of the boat and of course as well about your safety. He also reserves the berths for you and is responsible for that part of your journey.
2. Can we chose our skipper? Can we chose our itinerary?
The answer to both questions is yes! If you have some preferences regarding the skipper (non-smoker, vegetarian, German speaking, Italian speaking, young, good with children, someone who can teach you how to sail...) you can let us know and we will try to organise someone who will fit to your crew. Please have in mind that sometimes it isn't possible to organise a skipper according to your preferences, because that person can already be booked in the requested period. That's why we would advise you to book your boat and your skipper as soon as possible. To book click here. Nevertheless we will give our best to make your wishes come true so that you have the best sailing holiday experience ever.
While communicating with your skipper you can chose your own itinerary or just let your skipper take you to the best locations. We really recommend you to have a good communication with your skipper.
3. How much does it cost to hire a skipper?
The price for hiring a skipper per day is approx. 150 Eur to 200 Eur - it depends if it is a sailing boat or a catamaran and if it is a smaller boat or a bigger boat. The price for a smaller boat with Noa Yachting is 150 Eur and for a bigger boat it is 175 Eur. The client also needs to provide food for the skipper.
4. Where does the skipper sleep?
If crew accommodation is not planned in the layout of the boat, then it is custom to leave one cabin for the skipper. Sometimes crew members sleep in the saloon but this is not something we advise - the crew needs time to rest so they can give you their best. It is important to mention, the hostess and the skipper cannot share the same bed - some skippers and hostess are a couple and don't mind doing this.
5. What and where does the skipper eat?
The skipper is eating with you and he or she eats everything you eat, but sometimes the clients want their privacy. Are you wondering what then? In case you want your privacy you can talk with your skipper and provide him/her with approx. 30 Eur per meal in summer 2022 so that he or she can have a proper meal on their own and so that you can have your privacy. As mentioned the most important thing is the communication and kindness. You can talk to your skipper about this topic and come to a mutual conclusion.
6. What are your obligations towards a skipper?
You are obligated to provide accommodation and food for the skipper, but we recommend kindness and good communication as well. We recommend as well to give the skipper a cabin, so that he or she can rest and prepare for the next day.
7. Does the skipper speak my language?
Our skippers speak Croatian and English. If you would like to have a skipper that speaks Italian, German, Russian, Spanish or any other language, feel free to contact us and we will try to find a skipper who fits your needs.
8. Why is it good to have a professional even thought you know how to sail?
The first reason why to charter a professional is safety and peace of mind. Our skippers are experienced sailors and they know our waters. The skipper checks the forecast and sails accordingly. If you leave the boat and go explore the islands your thing will be well taken care of, as the skipper is on the boat. Our skippers are locals and sometimes they are better than tour guides. They can explain to you our history and show you some cool local places.
9. Do you need to tip?
Tipping is not obligatory, but it is recommended. If the provided service was good, then feel free to tip your skipper. The recommended tip and industry standard is 10 – 20% of the charter price.
